I started a comics workshop in my own kitchen, back in 1998. As a result,
it was called Kuhinja (The Kitchen). A group of cartoonists from Pancevo and
Belgrade would gather every Saturday and disscuss and draw comics together.
The group included personalities such as Vuk Palibrk, Sasa Mihajlovic,
Flyer, Mr Spiral, Vladimir Nedeljkovic Nedelja and others. In the past few
years Kuhinja has been publishing it's own zine and touring Serbia with a
comics exhibition.
One of the ideas behind the Kuhinja workshop was to explore different forms
of creativity in order to see how they relate to comics. The group of
cartoonists gathered in this D.I.Y. workshop was involved in various
experiments, including playing music together. We wanted to see how we could
collaborate and get along while involved in activities other than drawing
comics. It was fun because some of the Kitchen guys were already in a band
with CD releases behind them, while others (me, for example) played hardly
any instrument at all. As a result, we recorded a few tracks, including one
that is available here for free download. This recording was taken from a
video tape (we simply switched on the video camera while we played), and the
track that you can hear is the result of sheer improvisation At one point
we just started to play a little tune that seemingly came out of nowhere,
and we liked it even more when we later listened to the tape. We
realized that a moment of magic was caught on the recording, and we declared
it to be the Kuhinja Anthem, though I'm not sure that we would ever be able
to repeat it!
