Aleksandar Zograf (the pen name of Saša Rakezić) is a Serbian cartoonist, who began publishing his comics in 1980s Yugoslavia.
Zograf has been active on the international scene since the early 1990s, when his work started to appear in U.S. comics anthologies such as Weirdo and Zero Zero, and when Seattle's Fantagraphics Books published his titles, such as Life Under Sanctions and Psychonaut. Since comics about dreams are one of his long-researched topics, Zograf, together with Bob Kathman, co-edited an international anthology of dream-related comics (Flock of Dreamers) for Kitchen Sink Press as well.
In the late 1990s, his comics were more frequently published in Italy, and in France with L’Association. Soon his works were available not only in comics collections in his native Serbia, but in the UK, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Hungary, Austria, Japan, and elsewhere. In 2003, Aleksandar Zograf started to regularly publish 2 pages in color for Belgrade’s weekly Vreme, and (occasionally) for Italian weekly Internazionale; while his works appeared in dozens of magazines around the world.
Numerous solo exhibitions by this author have been held: from Roq la Rue Gallery in Seattle, to the Cartoon Art Museum of San Francisco, Un Regard Moderne in Paris, Mondo Bizzarro Gallery in Rome, to the Serbian Cultural Center in Beijing; and many others.
Zograf is the main narrator and researcher in the documentary/live action/animation movie titled The Final Adventure of Kaktus Kid (2018, directed by Đorđe Marković). He appears in several documentaries, and writes essays on the history of Serbian comics (among many other creative interests).
